Munsterplatz (Cathedral Square), Freiburg, Germany

May 25, 2002

Saturday morning, my second day in Freiburg.  No one seemed to care much about the rain.  For sale somewhere in the square:  Fruits and vegetables, flowers, bread and meat and cheese, childrens' toys, wine, lots of things edible that I didn't recognize...

Mount Pilatus, near Lucrne, Switzerland

Cattle barn below Fräkmüntegg on the mountain summit path, about 3200 feet above Lake Lucerne and 2300 feet below the peak.

Youth Hostel Grindelwald, Grindelwald, Switzerland

May 27-30, 2002

I stayed here three nights.  Never once was the weather as nice as this.  (The picture is from a postcard).

Bachläger, elevation 1950m

May 28, 2002

This is where Margo and I stopped walking on our first day at Grindelwald.  The snow was almost knee-deep in places, and almost all was new the night before (see Part X).  Bachläger is about a dozen cabins and barns and one restaurant (in the photo) used by alpine cattlemen in summer, about six miles above Grindelwald.  When we arrived it was completely deserted.

Halten

Switzerland may be the neatest, most painstakingly tidy country on the planet.  This is a typical farmhouse, beside a muddy path at the foot of the mountains, well off the main tourist route.

Staubbachfall

Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Just short of 1000 feet high.  M ürrenfall is at the far left.

Lauterbrunnen Valley

May 30, 2002

This may be the most incredible valley I've ever walked through.  Think Yosemite 100 years ago.

Mürren

May 30, 2002

Atop the cliff at the Mürren train station, near the head of Mürrenfall.  Peaks Eiger (left), Mönch, Jungfrau are in the background.  I'd walked up the cliff by way of numerous switchbacks and was waiting for the incline-railway back down to Lauterbrunnen.
