Bachläger, elevation 1950m May 28, 2002
This is where Margo and I stopped walking on our first day at Grindelwald. The snow was almost knee-deep in places, and almost all was new the night before (see Part X). Bachläger is about a dozen cabins and barns and one restaurant (in the photo) used by alpine cattlemen in summer, about six miles above Grindelwald. When we arrived it was completely deserted. |

Switzerland may be the neatest, most painstakingly tidy country on the planet. This is a typical farmhouse, beside a muddy path at the foot of the mountains, well off the main tourist route. |

Atop the cliff at the Mürren train station, near the head of Mürrenfall. Peaks Eiger (left), Mönch, Jungfrau are in the background. I'd walked up the cliff by way of numerous switchbacks and was waiting for the incline-railway back down to Lauterbrunnen. |
