California Highway 1, early morning.  Allison--then my girlfriend, now my wife--and I were driving the Coast Highway from Los Angeles to Portland, Oregon, three days into a two-week vacation.  An overgrown dirt track left the highway just beyond this mailbox and dissolved quickly into the green summer forest.  No one had passed that way for a long, long time.
